How it works

Our Flooring Installation Process

Every project follows the same six steps, whether it is a small powder room or an entire main floor. Knowing them up front means no surprises on installation day.

  1. In-home inspection

    We look at the existing floor and what is underneath it, check doorways, stairs and transitions, and talk through how you use the space. Concrete gets a moisture check; wood subfloors get checked for soft spots, loose panels and squeaks.

  2. Measurement and written estimate

    Every room, closet and stair is measured, with the right waste allowance for your layout — more for diagonal or herringbone patterns. You receive a written, itemized estimate.

  3. Preparation

    Old flooring is removed and hauled away, the subfloor is cleaned, and high spots are ground down or low spots filled until the floor meets the manufacturer's flatness requirement. New material acclimates in your home for 24–48 hours.

  4. Installation

    Boards, planks, carpet or tile are laid out so the cuts at walls and doorways look intentional, with expansion space left where the product needs it. Underlayment, vapour barrier or uncoupling membrane goes down wherever the floor calls for it.

  5. Finishing details

    Baseboard, quarter-round, transition strips and stair nosings are installed, doors are trimmed if the new floor sits higher than the old one, and every seam and edge is inspected.

  6. Cleanup and walkthrough

    We clean up, remove packaging and offcuts, and walk the finished floor with you — including which cleaners and furniture protectors suit your specific product.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl is the practical choice for Calgary basements, kitchens, laundry rooms and rental suites. Modern vinyl planks and tiles are waterproof through the core, so a leaking dishwasher or a wet boot tray will not swell the floor the way it swells laminate. It is softer and quieter underfoot than tile and warmer to the touch, which matters on a concrete slab in January. The catch: thinner glue-down vinyl shows every bump in the subfloor, so preparation matters.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Luxury vinyl plank is vinyl's premium form: thicker planks with a rigid core, a printed wood visual and a clear wear layer on top. That wear layer, measured in mils, decides how well the floor stands up to dog claws, kitchen chairs and grit tracked in from the street — for busy family homes we recommend going thicker than the cheapest option on the shelf. LVP clicks together as a floating floor and installs over most flat, sound surfaces.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate gives you a convincing wood look and a very scratch-resistant surface at one of the lowest installed prices. Its core is compressed wood fibre, so it is not the right floor for a basement with any moisture history or for a bathroom — but on main and upper floors with a dry, flat wood subfloor it performs very well. Newer water-resistant lines handle spills better than older products, though standing water is still a problem.

Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood — oak, maple, hickory, walnut — is the floor that adds the most to resale value and the only one that can be sanded and refinished several times over its life. It is also the floor that reacts most to Calgary's climate: wood shrinks when furnace heat and chinook winds dry the air, then swells again in summer. That is why we check indoor humidity before installing, and why engineered hardwood is often the smarter choice over concrete or in-floor heat.

Carpet

Carpet is still the most comfortable floor for bedrooms, basement family rooms and stairs. It is warm on a cold slab, cuts noise between floors and costs less per square foot than most hard surfaces. The pad underneath matters as much as the carpet itself — it decides how the floor feels and how long the carpet keeps its shape — so every carpet estimate we write lists the pad separately. We also install stair carpet with proper wrapped or waterfall edges.

Tile Flooring

Porcelain and ceramic tile is the most durable, water-resistant floor you can put in a bathroom, entry or kitchen, and it pairs well with electric in-floor heating. In Calgary, tile has one specific enemy: movement. Slabs shift with frost and settle over time, and tile bonded straight to that concrete tends to crack along the movement lines. We set tile on slabs over an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter DITRA so the tile and the concrete can move independently.

Basement flooring

Basements are where Calgary flooring projects most often go wrong. Below-grade concrete is cold, it can carry moisture up from the soil, and in homes built between the 1960s and 1980s it is frequently uneven. Before we recommend any product, we test the slab for moisture and check its flatness across the whole room.

Waterproof vinyl plank and SPC are the most common basement choices. Carpet over an insulated subfloor panel is a warm option for family rooms and play areas, while solid hardwood does not belong below grade. If you are developing a basement, plan the floor early — its height affects doors, stair nosings and baseboard. Floor repair and refinishing

Not every tired floor needs replacing. Scratched, dull hardwood can often be sanded and refinished. A handful of damaged vinyl or laminate planks can usually be swapped out if matching stock is available. Squeaks and soft spots are often a loose or damaged subfloor that can be fixed without tearing up the whole room.

We diagnose the cause first, then tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense. Cupped, buckled or water-damaged floors are a special case: the moisture source has to be found and fixed before any repair will hold.

What Calgary's Climate Does to Your Floors

Installation instructions are written for average conditions. Calgary is high, dry and cold for much of the year, with chinook winds that can swing the temperature sharply in a single day. Four local factors shape how we install every floor.

Dry winter air and chinook swings

When the furnace runs all winter, indoor humidity in Calgary homes can drop well below what wood-based flooring is designed for. Hardwood and laminate lose moisture and shrink, which shows up as gaps between boards in February that close again by July. We check indoor humidity before installing wood products, leave the correct expansion space at the walls, and may recommend a humidifier or an engineered product for homes that run very dry. Most manufacturers specify a humidity range for their warranty — we will show you the one for your floor.

Acclimation: 24–48 hours before installation

Flooring stored in a cold warehouse or carried in a truck in January needs time to adjust to your home. We deliver material and let it acclimate for 24 to 48 hours — longer when the manufacturer requires it — with the heat at normal living temperature. Installing cold boards straight off the truck is one of the most common causes of peaking, gapping and failed click joints we see in Calgary.

Uneven concrete in 1960s–1980s homes

Many basement slabs in older Calgary communities were poured without the flatness modern floating floors need. Over a dip or a hump, click-lock joints flex every time someone walks across them until they break or separate. We grind high spots and fill low spots with patching or self-levelling compound before installation. Frost heave and tile

Frost and seasonal ground movement put stress on concrete slabs, especially in entries, garages and basements near exterior walls. Tile is rigid, and tile bonded straight to a moving slab typically cracks within one to three seasons. The fix is an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter DITRA between the concrete and the tile, which lets the slab move without passing the stress into the tile. How much does flooring installation cost in Calgary?

It depends mostly on the material. What is the best flooring for a basement in Calgary?

Waterproof vinyl plank (LVP or SPC) is the most popular choice: it tolerates moisture coming through the concrete, installs over a slab and feels warmer underfoot than tile. Carpet over an insulated subfloor panel is a comfortable option for family rooms. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade.
