Removal Is Real Work — and It Should Be Priced Honestly
Flooring quotes vary wildly in Calgary, and removal is one of the main reasons. Some quotes bury it, some assume you’ll handle it, and some leave it out and add it later. We list it as its own line, because the difference between pulling carpet from a bedroom and lifting mortar-set tile off a basement slab is enormous — in hours, in equipment and in disposal volume.
Knowing that number up front also lets you make an informed choice: pull the carpet yourself, keep an old floor in place under a new floating floor, or have the whole thing handled.
What We Remove
Carpet and underlay
The fastest removal: carpet is cut into strips and rolled, underlay is lifted, then staples and tack strip come out. Staples are the tedious part — leaving them in place causes lumps and squeaks under a new floor.
Laminate and floating vinyl
Floating floors come up in reverse order without adhesive to fight, though damaged locking edges make boards brittle. Underlay and any vapour barrier come out with them.
Glue-down vinyl and LVT
Planks or tiles are lifted and the remaining adhesive is scraped or ground back. Residual adhesive matters: some old adhesives are incompatible with modern products, so the substrate is prepared until the new floor’s manufacturer requirements are met.
Sheet vinyl and linoleum
Often installed with full-spread adhesive and sometimes over a thin underlayment panel. Where the panel is stapled down, removing it whole is usually faster and cleaner than fighting the adhesive.
Ceramic and porcelain tile
The heaviest removal. Tiles are broken out and the mortar bed is chipped or ground off the substrate. On a slab, that means grinding concrete; over wood, it can mean removing damaged underlayment entirely.
Hardwood and engineered wood
Nailed floors are pried up board by board; glued floors need scraping and grinding afterwards. Original hardwood is worth assessing for refinishing before it’s torn out.
Stairs
Every step is a separate small removal: carpet, staples, tack strip and often construction adhesive, with nosings and risers to deal with.
Asbestos in Older Calgary Homes
Homes built before about 1990 may contain asbestos in flooring materials — most commonly in sheet vinyl backing, in 9-by-9-inch vinyl floor tiles and in the black cutback mastic used to glue them down. Intact, covered and undisturbed, these materials are not considered a hazard. Demolition changes that, because cutting, sanding, grinding and scraping can release fibres.
The safe sequence is simple: identify suspect material, have it tested by a qualified lab, and if it tests positive, have it removed by a qualified abatement contractor following Alberta’s requirements. We do not perform asbestos abatement ourselves — a certified contractor handles it, and we start once the space is cleared. In many cases the least expensive route is simply to leave a sound old layer undisturbed and float the new floor over it.
What We Find Under Old Floors
Removal is also an inspection. Common discoveries in Calgary homes:
- Layers. Carpet over hardwood over linoleum over the original subfloor is a frequent find in older houses.
- Original hardwood in good condition, which sometimes changes the whole plan.
- Water damage around dishwashers, fridges, toilets and tubs that nobody knew about.
- Squeaky, loose subfloor panels that are cheap to fix while exposed — see subfloor repair.
- Old adhesive and paint on basement slabs that must be removed for new flooring to bond.
- Slab cracks that were hidden under the last floor and need to be addressed before tile goes down.
Because some of this is invisible until the floor is up, we tell you at estimate time which items can only be priced once we can see the substrate.
How We Protect Your Home During Removal
Removal generates dust, debris and noise. We contain work areas, protect the pathways used to carry material out, and clean up at the end of the job. Old flooring is bulky and heavy — a single room of tile and mortar can be several hundred kilograms — so hauling routes and disposal are planned before we start.
In condos and apartment buildings, elevator bookings, protective coverings in common areas and permitted work hours all need to be arranged with building management in advance.

Why Rock Flooring for Removal
Removal is where corners get cut: staples left in, adhesive skimmed over, tile mortar left as a lumpy ridge under the new floor. Because we install what goes down next, we have every reason to leave the substrate genuinely ready — flat, clean and sound. Removal is quoted on its own line, estimates are valid for 30 days, we never ask for a deposit, and our crews are licensed, insured and WCB-Alberta covered.
