The Short Answer
Rock Flooring Calgary does not offer in-house financing or payment plans, and we are not a broker for anyone who does. We also never take a deposit — not to book the work, not to order material.
We are deliberate about both. Contractors who arrange your financing are usually earning something on it, and that cost has to live somewhere in the quoted price. Contractors who take large deposits are the ones homeowners end up filing complaints about. Keeping our end simple means the number on your estimate is just the cost of the floor.
If you need to spread the cost, your own bank or credit union will do it more cheaply than we could arrange for you. The sections below cover what those routes involve — and, first, the cheaper question of whether the project itself can be made smaller.
This page is general information about how homeowners pay for flooring, not financial advice. Rates, terms and program eligibility change, and we have no relationship with any lender. Confirm anything that matters with the lender or the program directly.
Our terms
What You Pay, and When
| Stage | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Estimate visit and written quote | $0. Free, itemized, valid 30 days, no obligation. |
| Booking the project | $0. No deposit required, ever — not a percentage, not a holding fee. |
| Ordering material | $0. We do not ask you to fund the material order. |
| After completion and walkthrough | The balance, on the terms set out in your written estimate. On large or phased projects, progress terms can be agreed in writing in advance. |
The walkthrough matters here. We go through every room, transition, edge and stair with you while the crew and the tools are still in the house, and anything that needs attention gets dealt with then. Payment follows a floor you have actually looked at.
The one thing that can change a total after the estimate is something genuinely hidden — water damage under old vinyl, a subfloor in worse shape than it looked through a carpet. When that happens we stop, show you, and price the extra work before continuing. It is approved by you or it does not happen.
Before you borrow
Seven Ways to Cut the Cost First
Interest is the most expensive line nobody puts on a flooring quote. Most projects can come down meaningfully without it.
| Strategy | How it works, and the trade-off |
|---|---|
| Phase the project | Bedrooms this year, main floor next. Costs slightly more per square foot because setup happens twice, but it keeps each invoice manageable and avoids borrowing entirely. |
| Change the material, not the scope | Vinyl plank at $8–$15 and laminate from about $7 per square foot sit well below hardwood at $8–$16. The gap is widest at the premium end, so the biggest saving is choosing a good mid-range vinyl over a premium hardwood. |
| Pull the old floor yourself | Removal and disposal runs $0.50–$3 / sq ft. Carpet, pad and tack strip are the realistic DIY case. Glued-down vinyl and mortar-set tile are not, and pre-1990 sheet vinyl should be tested for asbestos before anyone disturbs it. |
| Keep the existing baseboard | Where trim comes off cleanly it can go back on, with quarter-round covering the expansion gap. New primed baseboard runs $2–$5 / linear ft. |
| Keep the layout simple | A straight lay needs about 10% waste. Diagonal and herringbone patterns add labour and 15–20% material waste. Beautiful, and genuinely more expensive. |
| Do it all in one visit | Setup, haul-in and cleanup happen once per visit rather than once per room. Four rooms together cost less in labour than the same four rooms across three bookings. |
| Book in the quiet months | Mid-winter and midsummer are the slower stretches for flooring in Calgary. That does not change our pricing, but it does mean more choice of dates and less waiting. |
Where not to save
Three savings reliably cost more than they save. Skipping subfloor preparation — levelling a slab or re-securing a squeaking floor runs $1–$4 / sq ft and is far cheaper than doing it after a new floor is covering it. Buying a thin wear layer for a busy room, which looks tired in a few years in an entry or hallway. And putting laminate somewhere water will reach it — a basement, a bathroom, a laundry room — because its core swells permanently and the whole floor is then a replacement rather than a repair.
Our flooring cost guide works through every line with example budgets, and the flooring calculator turns your room measurements into a square footage and a cost range in about a minute.
Third-party options
How Calgary Homeowners Finance Flooring
Described in general terms on purpose. We have no relationship with any lender, and published rates go stale within months — so compare current offers yourself rather than trusting a number on a contractor's website.
| Option | Time to arrange | Suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home equity line of credit (HELOC) | Weeks — appraisal and paperwork | Larger whole-home projects | Usually the lowest rate of these options because your home secures it — which is also the risk. Rates are typically variable, so budget for them moving. |
| Personal line of credit | Days | Mid-sized projects — a main floor or a basement | Costs more than a HELOC and needs solid credit, but nothing is secured against your home and it is far quicker to arrange. |
| Fixed-rate personal loan | Days | Anyone who wants one predictable monthly payment | Fixed payments make budgeting easy. Check for a prepayment penalty before you sign if you might pay it off early. |
| Credit card promotional period | Immediate if approved | Smaller projects you can clear inside the promo window | Interest-free only until the promo ends, then the card rate applies. Ask whether unpaid interest is charged retroactively on the original balance — some products do that. |
| Retailer card or in-store financing | Same day | Buying material yourself at a big-box retailer | Covers material bought at that retailer only, never installation labour by another company. We do install customer-supplied material — see the FAQ below. |
| Federal and provincial efficiency programs | Months, and usually after the work | Projects involving insulation or heating, not flooring alone | Flooring on its own does not normally qualify. Programs change, pause and get replaced, and most require an assessment and an application before work starts. |
Five questions to ask any lender
- What is the total interest over the full term? Not the monthly payment — the total. It is the only figure that compares two offers fairly.
- Is the rate fixed or variable? And if variable, what happens to the payment if it rises a point or two?
- Is there a prepayment penalty? It matters more than people expect, because flooring is often paid off early.
- On a promotional card, what is the rate afterwards — and is unpaid interest charged retroactively? Some products bill interest on the original balance from day one if you do not clear it in time.
- What are the fees? Appraisal, setup and annual fees can quietly outweigh a slightly better rate.

What the Materials Actually Cost
| Item | Price range | Typical | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl / luxury vinyl plank (LVP) | $8–$15 / sq ft | $10–$12 | Thicker wear layers and rigid cores sit at the top of the range |
| Laminate | ≈ $7 / sq ft | — | Market average; water-resistant lines cost more |
| Hardwood | $8–$16 / sq ft | — | Solid $5–$15 · engineered $4–$12 |
| Porcelain tile | $8–$15 / sq ft | — | Ceramic $6–$10 · large format $12–$18 · natural stone $15–$40 |
| Carpet | $4–$8 / sq ft | — | Premium carpet $8–$12+ |
| Old flooring removal (add-on) | $0.50–$3 / sq ft | — | |
| Subfloor preparation (add-on) | $1–$4 / sq ft | — |
Those are installed prices — material and labour together. Removal, subfloor preparation, stairs and trim are separate lines on every estimate we write, because they depend on what is actually under your existing floor and nobody can price them honestly from a phone call.
That is also why a budget built from a range is worth less than a measured estimate. On an older Calgary home the preparation line can move a total more than the choice between two mid-range products does.

FAQ
Paying for Flooring
Does Rock Flooring Calgary offer financing or payment plans?
No. We do not offer in-house financing, lease-to-own or payment plans, and we are not a broker for a lender. We install flooring; lending is someone else’s business, and the companies that bundle the two often fold the financing cost into the quoted price. Our price is the price, and homeowners who need to spread the cost arrange it through their own bank or credit union.
Why do you not take a deposit when most contractors do?
No — not to book your project, not to order material, not at any stage. No percentage, no holding fee, nothing. This is the single most common question we get, and the answer never changes. A contractor asking for a large sum before any work has started is the most common feature of the flooring complaints we hear about in this city.
When do I pay, and how?
After the work is finished and we have walked through it with you. The payment terms are set out on your written estimate before anything is booked, so there is nothing to discover at the end. On large or phased projects we can agree progress terms in writing in advance. We accept e-transfer, cheque and credit card.
Can I get a price now and decide later?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Your written estimate holds for 30 days, which is long enough to arrange financing, get a second quote or simply think about it. Flooring material pricing moves, so after that window we confirm current numbers before booking — but there is no cost, no obligation and no deposit attached to letting one expire and coming back later.
What does a whole-home flooring project cost in Calgary?
It depends almost entirely on material and condition. As a rough frame, 1,500 square feet at carpet or laminate rates lands in the several-thousand range, while the same area in mid-range vinyl plank or hardwood runs into the mid five figures, before removal and subfloor preparation. Final pricing depends on your specific project — request a free estimate for an exact quote.
Is a HELOC the cheapest way to pay for flooring?
For a large project it is usually the lowest-rate option, because the borrowing is secured against your home — which is exactly why it deserves more thought than a line of credit. It also takes the longest to arrange. For a smaller project, an interest-free promotional period on a credit card that you can genuinely clear before it ends costs nothing at all. Compare the total interest over the full term, not the monthly payment.
Should I borrow now or wait and save?
If the current floor is causing a problem — wet carpet in a basement, a soft spot in a subfloor, cracked tile over a moving slab — the cost of waiting is usually higher than the interest, because damage spreads into the subfloor and the structure. If it is a cosmetic update you simply want, waiting and paying cash avoids interest entirely. A free estimate gives you the real number either way, which is the thing most people are missing when they try to make this decision.
Can I buy the flooring myself and have you install it?
Yes, including tile. Order about 10% more than your measured area for a straight layout, and 15 to 20% for diagonal or herringbone. Two cautions: check that the manufacturer warranty still applies when the product is installed by a third party, and have the material on site and acclimating 24 to 48 hours before installation day. Use our flooring calculator to work out quantities.
Are there grants or rebates for new flooring in Alberta?
Not for flooring by itself. Efficiency programs target insulation, heating, windows and similar upgrades, so the flooring-adjacent case is something like insulating a basement floor before new flooring goes down. These programs change, pause and get replaced regularly, they usually require an assessment and an approved application before work begins, and amounts vary — check the current federal and Alberta program pages, and with your municipality, before relying on one.
