Laminate Prices in Calgary
| Item | Price range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | ≈ $7 / sq ft | Market average; water-resistant lines cost more |
| Old flooring removal (add-on) | $0.50–$3 / sq ft | |
| Subfloor preparation (add-on) | $1–$4 / sq ft | |
| Baseboard installation | $2–$5 / linear ft | |
| Stairs — vinyl plank or carpet | $40–$80 / step |
Laminate’s installed price sits at around $7 per square foot for a good residential board with standard underlay. Premium water-resistant collections and thicker boards cost more; bargain-bin products cost less and generally show it within a couple of years.
What You Are Paying For
The board rating
AC3 handles all residential rooms, including busy ones. AC4 is built for very heavy traffic and light commercial use. The rating is about abrasion resistance — how long the printed surface survives grit, chairs and dog claws — and it is the specification worth checking before price.
Board thickness
Boards run from about 7 mm to 12 mm. Thicker boards feel more solid, sound less hollow and bridge minor subfloor imperfections. On a second floor, a 12 mm board over a dense underlay is noticeably quieter — which matters more than most people expect when bedrooms sit above a living room.
Underlay
Basic foam underlay is included in a standard quote. Acoustic underlays and products with built-in vapour barriers cost more and are worth it upstairs and over concrete. If a quote does not say which underlay it includes, that is a gap worth asking about.
Water-resistant collections
Newer water-resistant laminates cost more than standard boards and are a sensible upgrade for kitchens and busy entries — though they still do not belong in a bathroom or a damp basement.
The Add-Ons
- Removal and disposal: $0.50–$3 / sq ft, with carpet at the low end.
- Subfloor preparation: $1–$4 / sq ft. Upstairs, this usually means screwing down a squeaky OSB subfloor; over concrete, levelling.
- Baseboard: $2–$5 / linear ft for new primed trim, or quarter-round to cover the expansion gap against existing baseboard.
- Transitions at doorways, and door trimming where the floor sits higher than before.
- Stairs: $40–$80 / step per step when laminate continues up a staircase.
Example Laminate Budgets in Calgary
Upper floor of a two-storey home, 800 sq ft
Laminate at about $7 per square foot: roughly $5,600. Removing carpet, pad and tack strip at $0.50 to $3: $400 to $2,400. Fixing squeaks and flattening the subfloor at $1 to $4: $800 to $3,200. Quarter-round throughout, about 300 linear feet at $2 to $5: $600 to $1,500. Total: roughly $7,400 to $12,700.
Three bedrooms, 500 sq ft
Laminate at about $7: roughly $3,500. Carpet removal: $250 to $1,500. Light prep: $500 to $2,000. Total: roughly $4,250 to $7,000 — one of the lowest-cost ways to switch a home from carpet to hard surface.
Rental property main floor, 700 sq ft
A durable AC4 laminate installed at the upper end of the laminate range, plus removal at $350 to $2,100 and prep at $700 to $2,800. For landlords, the calculation is usually about turnover: a harder wear layer costs less over three tenants than replacing a cheap floor twice.
Laminate Flooring Labour Cost in Calgary (2026)
Labour is roughly half of a laminate floor’s installed price. Of the $7 per square foot a typical laminate project runs in Calgary, about $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot is installation labour and the balance is material and underlay — which is why two quotes using the same board can be hundreds of dollars apart. If you are searching for laminate flooring labor cost specifically, that $2.50 to $4.00 range is the number you are looking for, and the table below shows what sits inside it.
| Labour component | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate installation (open rooms) | $2.50–$3.25 / sq ft | Layout, underlay, cutting and clicking the boards, expansion gaps |
| Laminate installation (cut-up rooms) | $3.25–$4.00 / sq ft | Multiple closets, angles, bulkheads, islands and small rooms |
| Old flooring removal | $0.50–$3.00 / sq ft | Tear-out, haul-away and disposal; carpet at the low end |
| Subfloor preparation | $1.00–$4.00 / sq ft | Screwing down squeaks, patching, levelling, grinding |
| Baseboard or quarter-round | $2.00–$5.00 / linear ft | Installing new primed trim or quarter-round over the expansion gap |
| Stairs | $40–$80 / step | Treads, risers and matching nosings |
| Transitions and door trimming | Quoted per opening | T-moulds, reducers, thresholds, cutting interior doors to clear |
| Furniture moving | Usually included | Light and medium furniture moved and replaced |

What affects laminate flooring labour cost in Calgary?
Room shape, not just room size. A 400 square foot open living room and 400 square feet split across three bedrooms with closets are not the same job. Every closet, angle, bulkhead and door opening is layout time and cuts. Cut-up floor plans sit at the top of the labour range; open-concept main floors sit at the bottom.
What is on the floor now. Carpet and pad come up quickly. Glued-down vinyl, ceramic tile set in mortar, or two previous layers stacked on each other take hours and generate real debris. This is the single biggest swing between two homes of the same size.
Subfloor condition. Calgary’s 1990s and 2000s two-storeys are the common case here: OSB subfloors over engineered joists that have been drying and shrinking for twenty years, so the upper floor squeaks. Securing it is cheap while the carpet is up and expensive once laminate is over it. On older bungalows the issue is usually flatness instead — a main floor that has settled unevenly needs patching or levelling before a floating floor will sit right.
Stairs. Stairs are priced per step because they are labour, not material. A straight flight is predictable. Winders, open sides, landings and bullnose bottom steps each add time.
Access and the building. A walk-up bungalow with a driveway is the easy case. A third-floor condo with an elevator booking window, a loading-dock rule and a noise bylaw is not, and condo projects carry more scheduling overhead than the square footage suggests.
Whether the house is empty. An empty home installs faster than an occupied one. We move light and medium furniture as part of the job, but rooms that have to be worked around in stages take longer than rooms that are clear.
Doing it all at once. Setup, tool haul-in and cleanup happen once per visit. Four rooms in one visit costs less in labour than the same four rooms in three visits.
DIY vs professional installation — is it worth saving on labour?
Laminate is the most DIY-friendly hard floor sold, and for the right project it is a genuinely sensible way to save. On 500 square feet of bedrooms, skipping the $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot labour line saves roughly $1,250 to $2,000. That is real money.
| DIY | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Labour cost | $0 | $2.50–$4.00 / sq ft |
| Tool cost | $150–$400 to buy or rent | Included |
| Time, 500 sq ft | A full weekend, more for a first attempt | One day |
| Waste allowance needed | 15–20% — more cuts go wrong | 10% on a simple layout |
| Squeaks and levelling | Easy to miss, hard to undo later | Assessed and fixed before covering |
| Stairs and transitions | The usual failure point | Routine |
| Warranty | Material only; installation is on you | Material plus our workmanship warranty |
Where DIY works: square bedrooms, a basement rec room with simple walls, an upstairs hallway. One level, no stairs, few transitions, a subfloor you have already checked. Buy the extra material — plan 15 to 20% waste rather than 10%, because first-time cuts are less efficient and running short mid-job usually means a different dye lot.
Where it stops paying: stairs, which need nosings and a per-step method and are where most DIY laminate jobs visibly fail; transitions between different floor heights; any floor that squeaks or is not flat, because covering a problem is the expensive mistake in this entire category; and large open areas, where expansion gaps and long runs have to be planned rather than improvised.
The honest arithmetic. On a small, simple, dry, flat floor, DIY saves most of the labour and the risk is low. On anything with stairs, an uneven subfloor or multiple transitions, the labour you are saving is exactly the labour that decides whether the floor lasts fifteen years or two. We quote preparation as its own line specifically so you can see that part of the cost and make the call with the number in front of you.
Laminate vs the Alternatives
| Floor | Installed range | Best case for it |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | From about $7 per sq ft | Dry main and upper floors, tight budget |
| Vinyl plank | $8–$15 per sq ft | Anywhere water or concrete is involved |
| Carpet | $4–$8 per sq ft | Bedrooms, basements, stairs |
| Hardwood | $8–$16 per sq ft | Long-term homes, resale value |
The most common decision we help with is laminate versus vinyl plank. The honest rule: if the room can get wet or sits on concrete, pay the difference for vinyl. If it is a dry upstairs bedroom, laminate is excellent value.
Saving Money Without Regretting It
- Choose AC3 for bedrooms and AC4 for hallways and living areas rather than one premium product everywhere.
- Reuse existing baseboard where it comes off cleanly, adding only quarter-round.
- Pull your own carpet ahead of installation day.
- Keep the layout simple — diagonal and herringbone patterns add labour and 15–20% material waste.
- Do the whole floor in one visit rather than room by room, which saves setup time.
Do not save by skipping the underlay upgrade upstairs, ignoring squeaks before covering them, or buying a board with a thinner wear surface for a hallway. Those savings turn into complaints within a year.
What the Cheapest Laminate Quotes Leave Out
Laminate attracts the lowest quotes in Calgary, and the gap between a cheap number and a complete one usually comes down to five omissions:
- The underlay. A quote that does not name the underlay is often assuming the thinnest foam available. Upstairs, that is the difference between a quiet floor and a drumming one.
- Removal. Carpet, pad, tack strip and hundreds of staples take real time. If removal is not a line, ask who is doing it.
- Subfloor work. Nobody can promise a squeak-free floor without opening it first. A quote with no preparation allowance is a quote that plans to cover the problem.
- Trim. Every floating floor needs its expansion gap covered. If neither new baseboard nor quarter-round is listed, that cost is coming later.
- Transitions and door trimming. Doorways, stair nosings and height changes at tile or carpet all need profiles, and interior doors often need to be cut down.
None of these are optional extras. They are the difference between a floor that looks finished and one that does not.
How Long a Laminate Project Takes
For most homes, laminate is among the fastest floors to install. A few bedrooms typically go down in a day once the old carpet is out. A full upper floor or main floor usually runs two to three days including removal, subfloor work and trim. Material needs 24 to 48 hours in the home to acclimate before installation begins, so plan for that in the schedule rather than the labour cost.
Because it is quick, laminate is also the easiest floor to phase: bedrooms one month, hallway and living room the next, with a transition profile at the doorway in between.
