More Than Before-and-After Photos

A photo of a finished floor only tells part of the story. Each project here also explains the conditions we started with: the community and type of home, the old flooring, the state of the subfloor and the problem the homeowner wanted solved. That context is what lets you judge whether a similar approach would work in your own house.

If you are comparing floors, start with the material pages — each one explains where that floor works in a Calgary home and where it doesn't.

What Each Project Write-Up Includes

The home
Community, type and age of the house, and which rooms were involved.
The starting point
What flooring came out and what we found underneath it.
The preparation
Levelling, squeak repairs, moisture control or structural work the floor needed.
The new floor
The product, why it was chosen for that room, and how it was installed.
The numbers
Square footage and how long the project took from tear-out to cleanup.
The photos
Before, during and after — including the parts that get covered up.

How to Read a Flooring Contractor's Portfolio

Finished-floor photos all look good. What tells you whether a contractor is worth hiring is the information around them, and it is worth asking for on any project you are shown — ours included.

  • What was underneath. A photo of a floor says nothing about the slab, the squeaks or the moisture that had to be dealt with first.
  • Why that product. The right floor for a basement suite is not the right floor for a sunny main level, and a good contractor can explain the reasoning.
  • The edges and transitions. Look at doorways, stair nosings and where the floor meets tile or carpet. That is where rushed work shows first.
  • The stairs. Stairs are the hardest part of most projects, so portfolios that never show them are telling you something.
  • How long it took. Realistic timelines are a better sign than impossibly fast ones.

If you are still choosing a floor, our material pages cover exactly these questions — where each product works in a Calgary home, what it costs installed and what has to happen underneath it first. TheCalgary flooring cost guide puts the pricing for every material in one place.
