If you read only one answer on this page, read this one. The floor you can see is rarely what decides your project. What decides it is the subfloor underneath — a slab that is not flat, an upper floor that squeaks, concrete giving off moisture, a soft spot near a bathroom wall. Material choice follows from that, not the other way around.

So the sequence that works is: list the rooms, note what is wrong with the current floor, get a free measured estimate, and choose the product once you know what the subfloor needs. Choosing the plank first is how people end up with laminate in a basement.

Cost and Quotes

How much does flooring installation cost in Calgary?

It depends mostly on material. Installed prices run about $4–$8 per square foot for carpet, from around $7 for laminate, $8–$15 for vinyl plank (typically $10–$12), $8–$15 for porcelain tile and $8–$16 for hardwood. Removal, subfloor preparation, stairs and trim are priced separately. Final pricing depends on your specific project — request a free estimate for an exact quote. The full breakdown with example budgets is in our flooring cost guide, and the flooring calculator turns your room measurements into a number in about a minute.

What is included in the installed price?

Material, underlay where it is not already attached to the product, installation labour, and the vapour barrier or membrane the product requires. Removal of your old floor, subfloor preparation, stairs, baseboard and transitions are quoted as their own lines — not because they are optional extras, but because nobody can price them honestly without seeing what is under your existing floor.

Why do flooring quotes vary by thousands of dollars?

Almost always because of what each one leaves out. The usual omissions are subfloor preparation ($1–$4 / sq ft where needed), removal and disposal ($0.50–$3 / sq ft), the underlay grade, stairs, and the trim needed to cover a floating floor's expansion gap. Product grade accounts for the rest: two quotes can both say "vinyl plank" and mean a 6 mil wear layer and a 20 mil one. Our free estimate page explains how to put two quotes side by side.

Do you charge for estimates, and is there a deposit?

Estimates are free, including the visit and the measuring, and they are valid 30 days. There is no deposit at any stage — not to book the project, not to order material. Our financing page sets out the payment stages and the third-party options for spreading the cost.

Choosing a Material

What is the best flooring for a Calgary home?

There is no single answer, but there is a reliable rule: if the room can get wet or sits on concrete, choose waterproof vinyl plank. If it is dry and above grade over a wood subfloor, laminate is excellent value and hardwood is the premium choice. Bedrooms and stairs are where carpet still wins on comfort. Start from our main services or compare the options in how to choose flooring for a Calgary home.

What is the best flooring for a Calgary basement?

SPC vinyl plank over a prepared slab, for most basements. It is waterproof through the core, installs directly on concrete, and stays dimensionally stable through our humidity swings. Avoid laminate, whose fibreboard core swells permanently, broadloom carpet, which holds moisture against the slab, and solid hardwood, which cups below grade. Porcelain tile is excellent but cold without heating. Full detail on basement flooring and in is vinyl flooring good for basements?

Vinyl or laminate?

Vinyl is waterproof; laminate is not. That single fact settles basements, kitchens, bathrooms and mudrooms in vinyl's favour. Laminate has the harder surface — better against a large dog's claws — and is the cheaper floor, from about $7 per square foot installed. For dry bedrooms and upstairs hallways it is excellent value. See vinyl vs laminate in Calgary.

Can vinyl go over my existing hardwood?

Usually, and it saves the $0.50–$3 / sq ft that tear-out would cost. The wood underneath has to be flat to within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet, dry, solid and firmly fastened, with any squeaks fixed first — a floating floor hides access to a squeak rather than silencing it. The counter-argument worth hearing: if the wood is solid with thickness left above the tongue, refinishing it usually costs less and looks better. Both routes are compared in can you put vinyl flooring over wood floors?

What flooring works with in-floor heating?

SPC vinyl plank and tile are the best matches, because both conduct heat rather than insulating against it. The product must be manufacturer-rated for radiant heat, and the system has to stay under the specified surface temperature — commonly 85 °F or 29 °C. We install electric systems, which suit retrofits and single rooms. See heated floors.

Installation Day

How long does flooring installation take?

A single room is usually a day. A main floor or a basement in vinyl plank or laminate typically runs two to three days once removal and subfloor work are included. A whole home across several rooms runs longer, and tile and site-finished hardwood add setting and curing time on top. Add a day for removal and one to two days if the subfloor needs levelling or re-securing. Material also needs 24 to 48 hours acclimating in the house first. More in how long flooring installation takes.

What happens to my old flooring?

We tear it out and haul it to an appropriate disposal facility as part of the complete job, quoted as its own line at $0.50–$3 / sq ft — carpet and pad at the low end, glued-down vinyl and mortar-set tile at the high end. Hardwood in good condition is occasionally worth salvaging and we will say so if yours is. One important exception: in homes built before about 1990, old sheet vinyl and the adhesive under it can contain asbestos and should be tested before anyone cuts or scrapes it. We do not do abatement — that goes to a certified contractor and we schedule around it. See flooring removal.

Do you work in occupied homes and rentals?

Every day. We work around tenants, pets, home offices and small children, and we tell you about schedule changes before they happen rather than after. For landlords and turnovers, speed between tenancies is usually the priority and we plan around the dates — see flooring for rental properties.

Subfloors and Preparation

Does my subfloor need work?

Almost always something. At minimum we check flatness, generally to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and test concrete for moisture. The recurring Calgary issues are three: basement slabs that were poured as utility surfaces and never levelled, upper floors in 1990s and 2000s two-storeys that squeak because the framing has been drying and shrinking for twenty years, and old adhesive or patch compound left behind by a previous floor. Preparation runs $1–$4 / sq ft where it is needed and appears as its own line on your estimate. See subfloor repair.

Why does fixing squeaks now matter so much?

Because the only cheap moment to do it is while the old floor is up. Once a new floor is down, the same repair means working from the basement ceiling below, if there is access, or opening a floor you just paid for. We walk every exposed deck before installing and mark the movement. More in why is my floor squeaking?

Why does tile crack on Calgary concrete?

Slabs move — frost, seasonal ground movement, settling — and tile bonded straight to a moving slab cracks, often within a season or two. An uncoupling membrane between the concrete and the tile lets the slab move without transferring that stress upward. It is the single most worthwhile line on a tile quote. See tile flooring.

Calgary Conditions

Why does acclimation matter here more than elsewhere?

Because the gap between a delivery truck in February and a heated living room is enormous. Flooring that goes down the day it arrives is still changing size afterwards, and that is a leading cause of gaps, peaking and failed click joints in this city. We let material sit 24 to 48 hours in the home, or longer where the manufacturer requires it. Any installer who offers to fit it the same day is offering you a problem. More in the best flooring for Calgary winters.

Do you work outside Calgary?

Yes — every quadrant of the city, plus Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere and Strathmore, and Langdon, High River and Bragg Creek. See service areas for the full list and the community pages.

Do you have a showroom?

No. We are a service-area business, so we bring samples to you. Looking at flooring in the room where it is going, in your own light and against your own cabinets and trim, produces better decisions than a showroom does. Get in touch and we will arrange a visit.

Warranty and Aftercare

What warranty do I get?

Two. Your installation is backed by our workmanship warranty, and the flooring itself carries the manufacturer's product warranty, which varies by product and comes with documentation we hand over at the end of the job. Water from a leak or a flood is covered by neither — that is a home insurance claim. What is covered, what is excluded, and how to make a claim are all set out on the warranty page.

What is the fastest way to void a product warranty?

Installation that departs from the manufacturer's instructions — skipped acclimation, no expansion gap, the wrong underlay, no vapour barrier over concrete, or a product used in a room it is not rated for. After installation, the usual culprits are steam mops and wax or shine products on vinyl and laminate, and indoor humidity run far outside the specified range.

How do I look after a new floor?

Sweep or vacuum grit frequently with the beater bar off, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner the manufacturer approves. No steam mops on vinyl or laminate, no wax or shine restorers, no abrasive pads, and no rubber-backed mats on vinyl — rubber can stain it permanently yellow. Felt pads under every furniture leg. Hold indoor humidity in the manufacturer's range year-round. And keep a spare box stored flat indoors: it is what makes a future repair invisible.

Something has gone wrong — what now?

Photograph it, note when you first noticed it, and email contact@rockhomepro.com or call (403) 992-7707. We respond within one business day and arrange a time to come and look. The inspection is free, and it establishes whether the cause is installation, product or damage. See floor repair for what repairs involve either way.

Planning, Booking and Install Day

Where do I start if I have never replaced flooring before?

Start with the rooms and the problem rather than the product. Which rooms, what is on the floor now, and what is wrong with it — worn out, water damaged, squeaking, or simply dated. Then book a free estimate. Choosing a material first is the common mistake, because the subfloor and the room often rule out half the options before you have looked at a single sample.

Should I do the whole house at once or room by room?

All at once is cheaper per square foot, because setup, haul-in and cleanup happen once instead of three times, and because one material order means one dye lot with no shade difference at the doorways. Room by room is easier on cash flow and lets you stay in the house more comfortably. If you phase it, plan the transitions and buy the material for all phases together if you can.

Can I stay in my home during flooring installation?

Yes, and most of our customers do. We work room by room so there is always usable living space, and cutting is set up outside or in the garage to keep dust out of the house. Expect real noise during working hours and a room you cannot use for a day or two. The exceptions are site-finished hardwood, where the finish needs to cure, and large single-storey jobs where there is nowhere to shuffle furniture to.

Do I have to move my own furniture?

We move light and medium furniture — sofas, tables, beds, dressers — as part of the job. What we ask you to handle is anything fragile, valuable or electronic: televisions, computers, china cabinets, artwork and anything with sentimental value. Pianos, safes, pool tables and aquariums need specialist movers arranged before we start.

What happens if you find a problem under my old floor?

We stop, show you, and price it before continuing. Tearing out an old floor is when the surprises appear — water damage under sheet vinyl, a soft subfloor at a bathroom wall, a slab that is worse than it looked through carpet, or old adhesive that will not come off easily. The extra work is approved by you in writing or it does not happen, and that is also why our estimates list subfloor preparation as its own line with a range rather than pretending the number is already known.

How far in advance should I book flooring installation in Calgary?

Spring and autumn are the busiest stretches here, so give yourself a few weeks of lead time if your timing is fixed — before a move-in date, a rental turnover or family visiting. Mid-winter and midsummer are quieter and usually start sooner. Material also needs ordering and then 24 to 48 hours acclimating in your home, so the install date is never the day you decide.

Can I supply my own flooring material?

Yes, including tile. Buy about 10% more than your measured area for a straight layout and 15 to 20% for diagonal or herringbone, and order it all at once so every box is from the same batch. Two things to check: that the manufacturer warranty still applies when a third party installs it, and that the material is on site 24 to 48 hours ahead to acclimate. We will tell you before installation day if what arrived is not suitable.

Can you install new flooring over existing tile?

Often, yes. Tile that is firmly bonded, flat and uncracked makes a solid base for a floating floor, and skim-coating the grout lines gives the smooth surface a thin plank needs. It saves the cost and the mess of tear-out. It does raise the floor height, so doors, appliance openings and the top stair riser all need checking first. Cracked, drummy or uneven tile has to come out.

My basement slab has cracks — can I still put flooring down?

Usually. Hairline shrinkage cracks are normal in Calgary slabs and a floating rigid-core vinyl floor bridges them without trouble. What needs attention first is a crack with a vertical offset between the two sides, one that is noticeably wide, or one that has visibly moved — those are structural questions, and so is any crack that is wet. We check for all of it at the estimate and take moisture readings on the slab.

Does Calgary's dry winter air damage flooring?

It affects anything wood-based. Indoor humidity here often drops below 25% during a long heating season, and solid hardwood responds by shrinking — gaps open between boards in February and close again by summer. That is normal wood behaviour, not a defect. Running a humidifier to hold the range the manufacturer specifies, commonly around 35% to 50%, keeps the movement within tolerance and keeps the product warranty intact. Vinyl plank and tile are largely indifferent to it.

What does road salt and winter gravel do to floors?

Grit is abrasive, and in this city it arrives on every pair of boots from November to April. It is the single biggest cause of worn finishes in Calgary entryways, far more than foot traffic alone. Mats at every exterior door, frequent sweeping of the entry, and wiping up snowmelt rather than letting it stand will do more for the life of a floor than paying for a thicker wear layer.

Does new flooring help when I sell my house?

Worn or dated flooring is one of the first things buyers notice and one of the easiest things for them to price into a lower offer, so replacing it removes an obvious objection. Whether it returns what you spend depends on your price bracket, the material and the local market at the time — we are flooring installers, not realtors, and anyone quoting you a precise percentage return is guessing. What we can say is that a sound, well-installed floor in a current style helps, and a laminate floor swollen from basement moisture actively hurts.
