Why Choose Carpet Tile?
Broadloom carpet is one continuous piece. Carpet tile breaks that surface into modules, and that single change solves several problems at once. A grape-juice stain in the middle of a playroom becomes a two-minute swap. A leaking water heater in the basement means lifting the wet tiles, drying the slab and putting down fresh ones. Moving a heavy sectional reveals crushed pile that can be rotated out. And because tiles come in boxes rather than 12-foot rolls, they travel down tight basement stairs and up office elevators with no fuss.
Carpet tile suits households and businesses that value practicality over plushness. It won’t feel like a thick bedroom carpet over premium pad, and its seams are part of the look. But for rec rooms, home gyms, offices, rental suites and kids’ spaces, those are easy trade-offs.
Types of Carpet Tile
By backing
- Hardback (PVC or similar): the classic commercial backing — dimensionally stable, very durable and good at resisting moisture wicking up from a slab.
- Cushion back: a built-in foam or felt cushion for a softer feel and better sound absorption, popular in homes and quieter offices.
- Felt or fibre backings: often used in products with recycled content and in residential lines.
By surface
- Loop pile: tight and durable, the standard in offices and high-traffic areas.
- Cut pile: softer and plusher, better for home family rooms and playrooms.
- Patterned and textured tiles: hide soil and seams and allow creative layouts.
By format
Standard 24-inch squares are the most common, while long plank tiles create a directional, contemporary look and can be laid in herringbone or brick patterns.
We work with all major brands and can source your preferred manufacturer, or install carpet tile you have already purchased.
Layout Options
The arrow printed on the back of each tile shows the pile direction, and how you orient those arrows changes the look completely:
- Monolithic: every arrow points the same way, mimicking broadloom. It shows seams more than other methods.
- Quarter-turn: each tile is rotated 90 degrees from its neighbours, creating a subtle checkerboard of texture that hides seams well.
- Ashlar (brick): tiles in each row are offset by half a tile, like brickwork.
- Random (non-directional): tiles are placed in any orientation, designed for products that are made to hide their pattern repeats.
The manufacturer specifies which layouts each product is designed for, and following that keeps the finished floor looking intentional.
Carpet Tile Pros and Cons
Pros
- Replace individual tiles after stains, burns or water damage
- Easy to move into basements, condos and upper-floor offices
- Wide range of commercial-grade durability
- Less waste than broadloom in irregular rooms
- Wet tiles can be lifted so the subfloor can dry
Cons
- Seams are more visible than broadloom, especially in solid colours
- Firmer feel than broadloom over a thick pad
- Not suitable for stairs
- Tile edges can lift if they get soaked repeatedly
- Replacement tiles years later may not match the original dye lot
Where Carpet Tile Works Best
- Basement rec rooms and media rooms where a soft, warm floor is wanted but occasional water is a risk.
- Home gyms, using a durable loop or hardback product that handles equipment and sweat.
- Playrooms and kids’ spaces, where spills are guaranteed.
- Home offices and commercial offices, for durability, acoustics and easy under-desk replacement.
- Rental suites and property common areas, where damaged sections can be replaced between tenants.
How We Install Carpet Tile
- Measure and plan the layout. We find the centre of the room and plan rows so perimeter cuts are balanced, rather than starting against one wall and ending with narrow strips on the other.
- Remove the old flooring. Old broadloom, pad, tack strip and staples — or glued carpet and adhesive residue — are removed and disposed of as part of our complete service, priced as a separate line.
- Test and prepare the subfloor. Concrete is moisture-tested, and the slab is scraped clean, with cracks and low spots patched. Carpet tile needs a smooth, sound surface — bumps telegraph through thin commercial tiles.
- Apply the adhesive system. A release adhesive is rolled or troweled on and allowed to become tacky, or connector tabs are used if the product calls for them.
- Lay tiles tight, in the chosen pattern. Tiles are pushed firmly together without compressing the edges, with arrows oriented to the specified layout.
- Cut perimeters and fit around obstacles. Edges are cut cleanly against walls, door frames and columns, and transitions are fitted where carpet tile meets hard flooring.
- Leave spares. We recommend setting aside a box of tiles from the same lot for future replacements.
Carpet Tile in Calgary
Basements with a water history
Plenty of Calgary basements have had a close call — a failed sump pump, a leaking water heater, a spring storm overwhelming a window well, or the 2013 flood in communities near the Bow and Elbow rivers. For homeowners who want a soft floor but don’t want to risk wall-to-wall carpet again, carpet tile is a sensible middle ground. It is not a waterproof floor, so fixing the water source always comes first.
Offices and commercial spaces
Office fit-outs and tenant turnovers across the Beltline, downtown and suburban business parks favour carpet tile because it is fast to install, easy to transport and simple to spot-replace under desks and chairs. For commercial specifications and scheduling, see commercial flooring.
Home gyms and hobby spaces
Many Calgarians have turned basements and bonus rooms into home gyms and hobby spaces. A durable loop-pile carpet tile gives a softer surface than concrete, handles equipment better than plush carpet and lets you swap out tiles under a treadmill or rowing machine as they wear.

Carpet Tile Care and Repairs
Vacuum regularly, spot-clean spills immediately and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for periodic deep cleaning. Rotate tiles from low-traffic areas under furniture into busy paths if wear patterns develop. Replacing a damaged tile is simple: lift it out and set in a spare with the arrow pointing the right way. If you run out of spares or a larger area is damaged, our floor repair service can help source and install matching tiles.
Why Rock Flooring for Carpet Tile
