Carpet Prices in Calgary
| Item | Price range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet | $4–$8 / sq ft | Premium carpet $8–$12+ |
| Premium carpet | $8–$12+ / sq ft | |
| Stairs — vinyl plank or carpet | $40–$80 / step | |
| Old flooring removal (add-on) | $0.50–$3 / sq ft | |
| Subfloor preparation (add-on) | $1–$4 / sq ft |
Carpet remains the lowest-cost way to cover a large area, which is why it holds its place in bedrooms and basement family rooms even as hard surfaces take over main floors.
What You Are Paying For
Fibre and construction
Nylon costs more than polyester and lasts longer in traffic. Triexta sits in between, with strong stain resistance. Wool is premium. Beyond fibre, density and twist matter more than the marketing name on the sample: a shorter, denser carpet with a tight twist outlives a tall, loose one at the same face weight.
The pad
Pad is a genuine cost line, not an afterthought. Most homes are best served by around 8 lb rebond at 7/16 inch or less. Thicker is not better — too much cushion flexes the carpet backing and loosens the stretch. Carpet manufacturers often require specific pad, and using the wrong one can affect the warranty.
Room shape and seams
Carpet comes in 12-foot widths. Rooms wider than that need seams, which take planning and time, and irregular spaces generate waste. Two rooms with the same square footage can price differently for this reason alone.
Stairs
Stairs are their own line at $40–$80 / step. Waterfall installation is faster; cap-and-band wrapping takes longer and looks more tailored.
The Add-Ons
- Removal and disposal: $0.50–$3 / sq ft. Old carpet is at the low end, though staples and tack strip take time.
- Subfloor repairs: $1–$4 / sq ft. Fixing squeaks while the floor is exposed is much cheaper than after.
- Transitions where carpet meets hard flooring.
- Subfloor panels in basements, when you want warmth and a thermal break over concrete.
Example Carpet Budgets in Calgary
Three bedrooms, 500 sq ft
Carpet and pad at $4 to $8 per square foot: $2,000 to $4,000. Removing old carpet, pad and tack strip: $250 to $1,500. Total: roughly $2,250 to $5,500.
Stairs and upper hallway
A 14-step staircase at $40 to $80 per step: $560 to $1,120. Add roughly 150 square feet of hallway at $4 to $8: $600 to $1,200. Removal: $75 to $450. Total: roughly $1,235 to $2,770. This is the most common carpet project we quote in Calgary’s bi-levels and two-storeys.
700 sq ft basement family room
Carpet and pad at $4 to $8: $2,800 to $5,600. Removal of the old floor: $350 to $2,100. Slab preparation or insulated subfloor panels, depending on how the basement is built: from $700 upward. Total: roughly $3,850 to $9,000 depending on the subfloor system you choose.
Carpet vs the Alternatives
| Floor | Installed range | Best case |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet | $4–$8 per sq ft | Bedrooms, basements, stairs; warmth and quiet |
| Premium carpet | $8–$12+ per sq ft | Hallways, stairs, high-traffic family rooms |
| Carpet tile | Modular pricing | Basements with water risk, offices, gyms |
| Vinyl plank | $8–$15 per sq ft | Anywhere spills, pets or concrete are involved |
| Laminate | From about $7 per sq ft | Dry bedrooms where you prefer hard surface |
Where to Save on Carpet
- Put the premium carpet where the traffic is — stairs and hallways — and a mid-range product in bedrooms.
- Remove the old carpet yourself, leaving the tack strip and staples for the crew.
- Choose a carpet width and room layout that minimizes seams where possible.
- Carpet the bedrooms now and the basement later; carpet is easy to phase.
Do not economize on the pad or on power-stretching. Cheap pad wears out the carpet above it, and a room that was never properly stretched will ripple within a couple of years — and re-stretching costs money that a proper installation would have avoided.
Cost Per Year, Not Cost Per Square Foot
Carpet has the lowest purchase price of any floor we install and the shortest life in traffic, so the useful comparison is what it costs per year rather than per square foot. A budget carpet with thin pad in a busy hallway can look tired quickly; a denser nylon over a proper 8 lb pad in the same hallway keeps its texture far longer for a modest extra cost at purchase.
The same logic explains why we recommend spending differently room by room. Bedrooms see gentle use, so mid-range carpet performs fine. Stairs and hallways concentrate every trip through the house into a narrow path, and that is where premium fibre earns its price.
How Carpet Is Measured — and Why Quotes Differ
Carpet is manufactured in 12-foot widths, and it can only be cut from a roll in whole widths. That means the material required is rarely the same as the floor area: a 13-foot-wide room needs two widths, and the offcut may or may not be usable elsewhere in your home.
Good measuring plans those cuts across every room at once, places seams where they will not be seen, and keeps the pile direction consistent throughout. Two quotes for the same house can differ by hundreds of dollars purely on how carefully that plan was made — and a cheaper quote sometimes means more seams in worse places.
Ask any installer where the seams will be and which direction the pile will run. If the answer is vague, the plan has not been made yet.

Getting an Exact Carpet Quote
Final pricing depends on your specific project — request a free estimate for an exact quote. We measure every room and stair, plan the seams before quoting, list carpet and pad separately and include removal as its own line — so the number you compare is the number you pay.
