What SPC Flooring Is
SPC’s defining feature is its core. Finely ground limestone is mixed with PVC and stabilizers, extruded under heat and pressure and formed into a board that is far denser than wood, fibreboard or foamed vinyl. That density gives SPC three signature traits: it barely moves with temperature, it resists dents from dropped objects and furniture legs, and it stays stiff enough to ride over small bumps in the subfloor instead of mirroring them.
On top of that core sit a printed design film and a clear wear layer; underneath, many products add an attached pad. Planks lock together with a click profile and float over the subfloor rather than being glued down, so the floor can be installed quickly and individual planks can be replaced later.
SPC vs WPC vs Laminate
These three floating floors are often shown side by side in showrooms, and they are easy to confuse. The core is what separates them.
| SPC | WPC | Laminate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Limestone and PVC, very dense | Foamed PVC composite | High-density fibreboard |
| Water | Waterproof planks | Waterproof planks | Water-resistant at best |
| Dent resistance | Highest | Moderate | Hard surface; edges can crush |
| Stability in heat and cold | Excellent | Good | Moves with humidity |
| Feel underfoot | Firm and cooler | Softer and warmer | Firm; can sound hollow |
| Best for | Sunny rooms, basements, rentals, light commercial | Bedrooms and comfort-first rooms | Dry main and upper floors |
If comfort underfoot matters more than toughness, our luxury vinyl plank guide covers WPC in more depth. If the room is dry and budget is the priority, compare laminate flooring.
How to Tell a Good SPC Floor from a Cheap One
SPC has become one of the most heavily discounted products in flooring, and budget versions can look almost identical to premium ones on a sample board. A few checks reveal the difference:
- Core density. A denser core is heavier. Compare box weight against the square footage each box covers; a noticeably lighter box for the same coverage usually means a less dense, less stable core.
- Wear layer. 12 mil is fine for bedrooms; 20 mil is what we recommend for main floors, pets and rentals.
- Locking system. Look at the end joints. Some products use an angle-in profile on both edges; others use a drop-lock end joint that folds down. Either can work well, but thin, brittle locking lips chip easily during installation and fail sooner under traffic.
- Attached pad. Check the pad material and whether the manufacturer allows an extra underlay. Most don’t, and adding one can void the warranty.
- Warranty wording. Read the exclusions for direct sunlight, unheated spaces, radiant heat and commercial use — they vary a lot between brands.
- Documentation. Reputable manufacturers publish technical data sheets, installation instructions and indoor-air-quality certifications. If a product has none, walk away.
We have no exclusive deal with any manufacturer: we work with all major brands and can source your preferred manufacturer — or install SPC you have already purchased, after checking its specifications.
SPC Pros and Cons
Pros
- Most dimensionally stable vinyl in heat, sun and cold
- Waterproof core that won’t swell or soften
- Excellent dent resistance for kitchens, entries and rentals
- Bridges minor subfloor imperfections better than flexible vinyl
- Can often be installed over flat existing tile or sheet vinyl
Cons
- Firmer and cooler underfoot than WPC or carpet
- Can sound clicky without a quality attached pad
- Rigid locking edges can chip if planks are forced together
- Still needs a reasonably flat subfloor — rigidity doesn’t fix real dips
- Floating installation isn’t ideal under heavy rolling loads
Where SPC Is the Best Choice
- Rooms with big south- and west-facing windows, where softer vinyl cores are more likely to move in the heat.
- Large open areas. Because SPC moves less, many products allow longer continuous runs before a transition moulding is needed — check the specific product’s limits.
- Basements, over a slab that has been tested for moisture and prepared flat.
- Rental properties, where dent resistance and quick plank replacement keep turnover costs down.
- Light commercial spaces such as boutiques, salons and small offices without heavy carts.
- Over existing hard floors, when removing old tile would be messy, noisy or expensive.
It is a weaker choice for bedrooms and playrooms where softness matters, and for spaces with constant rolling loads, where a glue-down commercial vinyl performs better.
How We Install SPC Flooring
- Evaluate what’s there now. If the plan is to go over existing tile or sheet vinyl, we check that it is flat, well bonded and within the manufacturer’s limits for grout lines. If not, it comes out.
- Test concrete for moisture. Every slab gets a moisture test before a floating floor goes down, and a vapour barrier is added where the product or the reading calls for one.
- Remove old flooring if needed. Tear-out and disposal are part of our complete service, quoted as a separate line.
- Prepare the subfloor. Humps are ground and dips filled to the product’s flatness tolerance.
- Acclimate. Boxes rest in the room at normal living temperature for the time the manufacturer specifies.
- Cut cleanly. Straight cuts are scored and snapped; notches and door-jamb undercuts are done with saws suited to a mineral core, which dulls ordinary blades quickly.
- Lock planks without forcing them. Rigid SPC tongues can crack if they are hammered hard. Planks are engaged at the right angle and tapped gently, and any plank with a damaged locking edge is set aside rather than forced into the floor.
- Leave expansion space and add transitions. Gaps at walls and fixed objects are maintained, and transitions go where the manufacturer’s run limits or doorways require them.
- Finish. Quarter-round or new baseboard, stair nosings and a final clean.
SPC in Calgary Conditions
Low winter sun and chinook afternoons
In December and January, Calgary’s sun sits low in the sky and reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows, heating a strip of floor far more than the rest of the room. Add a chinook afternoon with the furnace still running and the temperature difference across a single floor can be dramatic. That is where SPC’s stability pays off. Lighter colours absorb less heat than dark ones, and we still leave full expansion space at every wall.
Going over old floors in older homes
Many kitchens and bathrooms in Calgary homes from the 1980s and 1990s still have their original ceramic tile. Removing it is loud, dusty work that often damages the subfloor underneath. When that tile is flat and solidly bonded, SPC can frequently go right over it, saving demolition cost and time. We check transitions to neighbouring rooms first, since the added height has to finish cleanly at doorways. If the old floor is sheet vinyl from before about 1990, read our note on asbestos in older vinyl before anyone disturbs it.

SPC’s most common home in Calgary is the basement, and our basement vinyl guide explains why the rigid core matters on a cool slab that cycles between a dry winter and a humid summer.
SPC Maintenance and Repairs
SPC needs very little: regular sweeping or vacuuming, a damp mop with a cleaner approved by the manufacturer, and no wax, polish or steam. Walk-off mats at exterior doors should be woven or vinyl-backed rather than rubber-backed. The most common damage we see is a chipped plank edge from a dropped cast-iron pan or a heavy tool. Because the floor floats, that plank can be replaced — which is why we recommend keeping a few spares from the original installation. Our floor repair team handles plank replacement and separated joints.
Why Rock Flooring for SPC
SPC is marketed as foolproof, and that is exactly why it gets installed carelessly: over a slab nobody tested, with locking edges forced together, or floated over tile that wasn’t flat enough. We test concrete for moisture, prepare the subfloor to the product’s tolerance and install to the manufacturer’s instructions so the warranty stands. Your estimate is written and itemized, valid for 30 days, and we never ask for a deposit. Rock Flooring Calgary is licensed, insured and covered by WCB-Alberta.
