Tile Installation Cost in Calgary

Porcelain tile runs $8 to $15 per square foot installed in Calgary, ceramic $6 to $10, large-format $12 to $18 and natural stone $15 to $40. Most of the difference is labour — and most of the value is in what goes under the tile.

Tile pricing separates into three parts: the tile you choose, the labour to set it, and the assembly underneath that keeps it flat and crack-free.

What Drives Tile Pricing

Tile type

Ceramic is the most affordable and perfectly capable indoors. Porcelain is denser, absorbs almost no water and is our default for Calgary entries, bathrooms and heated floors. Natural stone is the premium option and needs sealing and a stiffer floor.

Tile size

Small mosaics and large-format tiles both cost more to install than standard sizes, for opposite reasons: mosaics have enormous numbers of joints; large-format tiles demand a near-perfect substrate and lippage control.

Layout

A straight grid is the baseline. Diagonal layouts, offset patterns with long tiles, borders and feature strips all add cutting time and waste — the same $1–$3 / sq ft band that applies to patterned plank floors.

Substrate

This is where Calgary tile budgets are really decided. A flat, stiff, sound substrate needs little; a wavy basement slab or a bouncy wood floor needs grinding, levelling or added plywood before tile can go down safely.

Membrane and waterproofing

An uncoupling membrane at $2–$4 / sq ft is standard on slabs. Wet areas may also need waterproofing details at the perimeter and at fixtures.

Heated Tile Floors

Electric in-floor heating is installed with the tile — the element sits directly beneath it — so it is quoted as part of the same project. Cost depends on the heated area, whether we use a mat, loose cable or a heat-ready membrane, the thermostat, any insulating layer and the electrician’s connection. It is the single best upgrade for a basement bathroom or a room over a garage. See our heated floors page for how the systems work.

Example Tile Budgets in Calgary

60 sq ft bathroom in porcelain

Tile at $8 to $15 per square foot: $480 to $900. Uncoupling membrane at $2 to $4: $120 to $240. Removing the old floor: $30 to $180. Total: roughly $630 to $1,320, before optional floor heating.

120 sq ft entry and mudroom in porcelain

Tile at $8 to $15: $960 to $1,800. Membrane: $240 to $480. Removing old tile at the top of the removal range: $60 to $360. Substrate levelling: $120 to $480. Total: roughly $1,380 to $3,120 — and worth doing properly, because the entry takes the most abuse of any floor in a Calgary house.

200 sq ft basement bathroom and laundry in large-format tile

Large-format tile at $12 to $18: $2,400 to $3,600. Membrane: $400 to $800. Slab preparation for the flatness large tile requires: $200 to $800. Removal: $100 to $600. Total: roughly $3,100 to $5,800.

Tile vs the Alternatives

Floor Installed range Where it wins
Porcelain tile $8–$15 per sq ft Bathrooms, entries, heated floors, longevity
Ceramic tile $6–$10 per sq ft Budget-conscious indoor floors
Large-format tile $12–$18 per sq ft Modern look with fewer grout lines
Natural stone $15–$40 per sq ft Unique, premium material
LVT (tile-look vinyl) Within the vinyl range Warmer, softer, unaffected by slab movement

If the room is a basement bathroom on a cracked slab and the budget is tight, LVT is a legitimate alternative that will not crack.

Where to Save on a Tile Project

  • Choose a well-made porcelain in a standard size rather than the largest format available.
  • Keep the layout square rather than diagonal.
  • Use a mid-range tile on the floor and spend the difference on the membrane and preparation.
  • Tile the rooms that need tile — entries, bathrooms, laundry — and use warmer, cheaper floors elsewhere.

What never to cut: the membrane on a slab, the substrate preparation, or mortar coverage under the tile. Those three are the difference between a floor that lasts thirty years and one that cracks in its second winter.

Grout, Sealing and the Cost After Installation

Tile’s running costs are small but real. Cement grout should be sealed once it has cured, and resealed periodically in kitchens, entries and bathrooms — a modest material cost and an afternoon of work. Epoxy and high-performance grouts cost more up front and need no sealing, which can be worth it in a busy entry that takes ice melt all winter.

Natural stone adds its own maintenance: most stone needs sealing on installation and again on a schedule, and it wants pH-neutral cleaners rather than the acidic products that etch it. Porcelain itself needs nothing beyond regular cleaning.

Budget for a small box of spare tiles from the same production run too. A cracked tile years later is a quick repair if you have matching stock, and an expensive compromise if the line has been discontinued.

How Long a Tile Floor Takes

Tile is not a one-day floor. A bathroom typically runs across several days: removal and substrate preparation, membrane, setting the tile, then grouting after the mortar has set, with cure time before the room goes back into service. Larger areas and heated floors add more stages, and electric heating must stay off until everything has fully cured.

That schedule is worth planning around — especially for a home’s only bathroom. We map the stages on the estimate so you know which days the room is out of use, rather than discovering it midway through.

FAQ

Tile Installation Cost FAQs

How much does tile installation cost per square foot in Calgary?

Porcelain tile runs $8 to $15 per square foot installed, ceramic $6 to $10, large-format tile $12 to $18 and natural stone $15 to $40. Substrate preparation, uncoupling membrane, removal of the old floor and any in-floor heating are quoted separately.

Why is tile more expensive to install than vinyl or laminate?

Because far more of the work happens before the tile is set: flattening the substrate to a tight tolerance, installing a membrane, setting each tile with full mortar coverage, controlling lippage, then grouting and sealing. Tile is the most labour-intensive floor we install, and that labour is what makes it last for decades.

Do I really need an uncoupling membrane?

On a Calgary concrete slab, we consider it essential. Slabs move with frost and settlement, and tile bonded directly to them tends to crack along those lines. The membrane adds $2 to $4 per square foot — far less than replacing a cracked floor.

How much does a tiled bathroom floor cost?

A 60 square foot bathroom in porcelain is roughly $480 to $900 for the tile installation, plus $120 to $240 for an uncoupling membrane and $30 to $180 to remove the old floor. Electric floor heating is an additional line, priced with the tile.

Does large-format tile cost more to install?

Yes, $12 to $18 per square foot. Large tiles need a much flatter substrate — no more than 1/8 inch variation in 10 feet — plus specialized mortar, back-buttering and levelling clips. The preparation is the cost, not the tile itself.

How much does it cost to remove old tile?

Tile removal sits at the high end of the $0.50 to $3 per square foot removal range, because the tile has to be broken out and the mortar bed ground off the substrate. It is dusty, heavy work, and disposal weight adds to it.

Is natural stone worth the extra cost?

It depends on the look you want. Stone at $15 to $40 per square foot brings unique variation that porcelain can only imitate, but it is more porous, needs sealing, and requires a stiffer floor structure. For most Calgary bathrooms and entries, porcelain delivers better value and less maintenance.
