Flooring in New Brighton
New Brighton was built through the 2000s as a family community, with its own residents’ club at the centre and a mix of detached homes, duplexes and townhomes around it. Most homes are now fifteen to twenty years old, which places them squarely in their first full flooring replacement.
That is a good place to be. The original flooring is worn enough that replacing it is obviously worthwhile, while the structure underneath — sheet subfloors, reasonably flat slabs, modern drainage — is generally sound. Preparation costs tend to be lighter here than in Calgary’s older quadrants, and projects are predictable.
What the Homes Are Like Here
Typical New Brighton homes have an open main floor finished in laminate or early vinyl plank, carpeted stairs leading to bedrooms and often a bonus room, and a basement that is either unfinished or was developed once, simply, some years ago.
The wear pattern is consistent across the community: stairs and upstairs hallways first, then main-floor traffic lanes from the garage door to the kitchen, then bedrooms last.
The Flooring Work We Do in New Brighton
- Stairs and upstairs carpet, the most requested single project.
- Main-floor replacement, usually to vinyl plank.
- Basement developments, complete or phased.
- Squeak repairs while the old floor is up.
- Plank and carpet repairs, where damage is localized.
Why Stairs Wear Out First
Every trip between levels in a two-storey home lands on the same fourteen or so steps, and each step concentrates that traffic onto the nosing — the front edge. Builder carpet, usually a lower-density product over thin pad, flattens there long before it does in a bedroom.
Replacing stairs alone is a legitimate project, and one we do often. Two decisions make the difference: choosing a resilient fibre with a tight twist rather than a soft, plush one, and using the right pad — thinner and firmer on stairs than in open rooms, so the carpet wraps tightly and stays put.
If you are also replacing the upstairs carpet, doing both together saves a second mobilization and lets us plan the transition at the top of the flight cleanly.
Basements: Plan the Whole Thing First
Phasing a basement is normal and sensible. Planning it in phases is not.
Before the first stage goes in, we map the finished floor heights across the whole basement, decide where any future bathroom tile will meet the main floor covering, and confirm whether an insulated subfloor panel system is going in — because that decision changes the height of the bottom stair riser and the clearance at the basement door for every stage that follows.
With that planned once, each phase can be installed whenever the budget allows and still fit together.
Floors That Suit New Brighton Homes
- Luxury vinyl plank on main floors and in basements.
- Carpet on stairs and upstairs, over a proper pad.
- Laminate where budget is tight and rooms stay dry.
- Porcelain tile in entries and basement bathrooms.
Pricing in New Brighton
Pricing is consistent across Calgary: vinyl plank $8 to $15 per square foot installed, carpet $4 to $8, laminate from about $7, with removal at $0.50 to $3 per square foot, preparation at $1 to $4 where needed, and stairs at $40 to $80 per step for carpet or vinyl. Because subfloors here are typically in good condition, preparation lines are usually at the lower end. Full detail is in the Calgary flooring cost guide.
